The difference between men and women regarding property division

Divorce is a complicated process, and it is no surprise to Ohio readers that men and women approach certain aspects of divorce differently, including property division. In fact, the process of property division is one of the most emotionally challenging aspects of divorce, as people typically have unwavering desires to protect their assets. Fortunately, there are ways to protect property during divorce, while pursuing a desirable and beneficial resolution.

When a couple files for divorce, Ohio law will have a direct impact on how property is divided between the couple. One of the hardest parts of the division of property and assets is determining which assets qualify as marital property and are, thus, eligible for distribution. This process often causes conflict and debate, particularly over the actual values versus perceived or emotional values of certain assets and properties.

Mediation is an option for couples who wish to negotiate these issues in a non-adversarial setting. The psychological differences between men and women can have a direct impact on the divorce process, and it can be easier and less stressful when a neutral third party is working to help resolve some of the more complicated issues. This is not a solution for every couple, but it can be useful to explore this option with the assistance of a family law attorney.

The emotional and psychological impact of a divorce will last for many years, along with any final property division agreements. You have the right to work closely with a lawyer who not only understands the emotional effects of your divorce decisions but also actively seeks a resolution that will benefit you for years to come. Divorce is almost always a complex process, but help is available.
