Divorce follows allegations of embezzlement

The reason an Ohio couple chooses to divorce can be one among many. Money issues, lack of communication or intimacy and infidelity are just a few of the causes for which couples seek the services of a family law attorney. The husband of a former employee of a nonprofit agency wants a divorce on the heels of a financial scandal.

After 23 years of marriage, the husband filed for a divorce just days into the new year. The wife was accused late last year of embezzling nearly $300,000 from an agency that works to develop and enhance the downtown area of a major city. The physical separation of the couple followed the announcement.

The husband says he wants a divorce because their personalities clash. Although he claims the dollar amount of their jointly-held assets was diminished in the wake of her alleged deceit, he wants the court to grant him the majority of their holdings and that the assessment should be based on previous values. The wife asserts her husband is mistaken in his claims against her.

Going through a divorce is difficult, whether the motivation to end the marriage comes from extreme discord or mutual agreement. Attempts to agree on child support and custody terms, visitation schedules, spousal support and division of debts and assets can intensify bitter feelings that may already exist. An attorney who has extensive experience in divorce negotiation and who is familiar with the laws specific to Ohio will help a client make the best decisions given the circumstances involved.
