Man devastated by possible loss of “Star Trek” home in divorce

Every marriage has some possession that is important to one spouse and only tolerated by the other. When divorcing, these possessions can become issues in property division. When the much-loved possession is the home, however, those emotions can further complicate the post-divorce lives of the exes.

One English man claims he may lose his life’s work because of his divorce. His ex-spouse wants to sell their flat, which he painstakingly turned into a recreation of the U.S.S. Voyager from the “Star Trek: Voyager” television show that aired in the 1990s. He claims that it would cost around £100,000 to rebuild the interior of the flat somewhere else (more than $150,000 in the United States).

The man’s ex-wife wants to sell the home as a normal flat, meaning that all the work the man has put into the home will have to go. He has been working to change his home into a spaceship since 1997. He admits that he cried when he found out that he may lose his Voyager-themed home. The man’s ex-wife owns the house. The man is a DJ, and filed for bankruptcy in 2006 because of the cost of the renovations.

While most divorces do not have quite the unusual situation encountered by this divorced couple, equally emotional possessions (if a bit less outlandish) still must be divided in a divorce. From the marital home to meaningful possessions, assigning property can require the division, and sometimes separation, of beloved possessions. Often the best way to do this is to let experienced family law attorneys handle the negotiations in a dispassionate manner.
