Couple may have to choose to divorce

On Behalf of | Jul 18, 2018 | Divorce

The motivation for most Ohio couples to get a divorce is often because something in the marriage is not working for one or both spouses. When that happens and they will not or cannot fix the problems, the seemingly natural solution is to separate. One couple, however, may be getting a divorce for a completely different reason.

The husband, an Army veteran, and his wife are looking at just one option to get their oldest daughter the healthcare she needs. The 6-year-old girl has a number of conditions that accompany Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, a rare chromosomal disorder. She can do almost nothing on her own and requires care all day, every day.

The couple pays over a third of the father’s yearly income for the girl’s medical expenses. Even though his salary of approximately $40,000 is considered low income, he still makes too much to qualify for any help from Medicaid. The mother’s only job is to care for her two daughters, and if the couple divorces, her single, unemployed status will make the girl eligible for the federal and state help needed. The parents do not want to end their marriage, but if that is the only option available to obtain the essential care, they will not hesitate to take that step.

No matter the reasons a couple finds divorce to be the course their marriage takes, there is value in utilizing the assistance of an attorney. It is easy to make costly mistakes in an agreement that has been drawn up without the benefit of legal consultation. To minimize the risk of error, finding an Ohio attorney with extensive experience can be just the solution for a potential client’s needs.
