The changing approach to child custody

During a divorce, Ohio parents are concerned with protecting the best interests of their children. One of the most effective ways to do this is to ensure that a child custody agreement is sustainable and benefits all minor children, no matter the emotions and issues that exist between the parents. For many families, this means maximizing time spent with both parents, not just the mom.

Studies have found that children adjust more easily and navigate their parents divorce better when they are allowed to have a strong relationship with both parents. Traditionally, the mother was granted primary custody, and the dad was allowed minimal time during the weekends. However, this arrangement is becoming less frequent as many families and even state laws are changing in order to provide both parents with significant parenting time.

Meaningful involvement by both parents in the lives of their children necessitates that children share time equitably between the two parties. This may be hard for parents who just emerged from the difficult process of divorce, but a carefully drafted custody order can prevent disputes and confusion over transitions. As the perspective regarding child custody is changing, more Ohio parents may find that shared parenting is the best option for their family.

Divorce is often hardest on the children, but a thoughtful child custody order can prevent many unnecessary issues. Working with an experienced lawyer can help a parent understand what it is possible and how to approach this often difficult and complex matter during a divorce. A complete case evaluation can reveal what options are available for a specific situation.
