Unique challenges of a "Gray" divorce

Going through a divorce can be one of the most difficult experiences a person may face.  Most enter marriage truly believing in the commitment they make to be with their partner forever. In the United States, including in Ohio, there has been an increasingly common phenomenon which has gained the moniker of "gray divorce." This term is used for couples who decide to divorce later in life, when their hair is "gray."  In the past, people who stayed married after a few years generally stayed together for life.  This recent phenomenon is due to many factors, such as people living longer, and divorce becoming more socially acceptable.

Gray divorces have unique challenges as opposed to those occurring earlier in life or after only a few years of marriage.  After being with another person for so long, the loss can feel like losing sight or hearing. A recent article lists some helpful tips to get through the initial pain and grief of a gray divorce.

While dealing with the grief of losing a partner, it is important to make sure that legal and financial issues are handled properly. After being together for years, it is difficult to determine a way to easily split assets.  Even if the divorce is not contested, consulting an Ohio family law attorney will ensure that assets are protected.  Seeking legal separation instead of an immediate divorce may be a way to avoid responsibility for any new debts that the other party incurs while determining asset division and finalizing the divorce.

Maintaining one's health is also paramount during this time of high stress, as many seek comfort in eating, drinking or indulging in other vices.  It is vital to stay active and also realize that there is no longer a stigma attached to attending events solo.  There are many ways to connect with like-minded groups of people who enjoy similar interests.

While navigating this difficult time, having a lawyer with knowledge of the divorce laws in Ohio will be essential.  An attorney can suggest options to secure an equitable settlement of all material issues. It's possible to get divorced without a great deal of acrimony in most cases, and having the right lawyer can go a long ways toward achieving that goal.
