Licking County marriage, divorce rates higher than Ohio average

On Behalf of | Aug 17, 2011 | Divorce

Licking County, Ohio, has reported a higher marriage rate than the rest of Ohio for much of the past two decades. The county has also had a higher divorce rate than the rest of Ohio for the same amount of time.

Though these rates have both been high for a considerable amount of time, this may be changing soon. Marriage rates are much lower now than they were in 1990. Two years ago, the marriage rate was 6.1 per 1000 people in Licking County. In 1990, the marriage rate was 9.3 per 1000 people.

Some experts believe that marriage in Licking County has been affected by a heavier focus on work life, increased individualism and parental divorces. Individuals that have watched their parents’ marriages fall apart have experience with divorce. Experts suggest that some of these people are choosing to postpone marriage until they are certain they can spend the rest of their life with another person. Others that are putting off marriage may be pursuing their career goals, hoping to establish themselves financially before considering marriage. However, despite the decreasing marriage rate, the divorce rate still remains higher than the Ohio average.

As can be seen from these statistics, many people still consider divorce after years of marriage. For any number of reasons, a couple may decide that parting ways is the best option for both parties. In these cases, it is important to have a good understanding of the divorce process. Many decisions need to be made surrounding property division, alimony, and child support and custody if the couple has children. Speaking with an experienced divorce attorney may be helpful as you begin navigating the divorce process.
