Single mothers and divorce: post-divorce security

Divorce is hard enough, but it can be especially stressful when mothers are left facing life as a single parent with a tremulous financial standing. It is important for any Ohio mother who is caring for children to understand how to protect her rights during a divorce while still actively pursuing her legal goals. With the help of a lawyer, it is possible to emerge from the divorce process in full control of the financial situation.

It is important for a single mother to pursue any support to which she may be entitled. Child support may be granted for the needs of the children, but alimony will be based on several factors, including the length of the marriage, the age of the children and the woman's capacity to earn for herself. After the divorce, a mother who once stayed at home full time may have to re-enter the workforce. Without rightful support, single mothers may be left with financial stress long after the divorce is final.

Ohio readers know that there are many other financial issues that must be addressed during a divorce. Division of marital property will distribute assets and debts, but a person should carefully consider the monetary burden and tax consequences of any property. For example, receiving the marital home may seem like a victory, but it can be costly to maintain a property on just one income.

When navigating a divorce, a mother should take steps to protect her future. It is important to work with a lawyer that can be trusted to actively pursue a positive and beneficial outcome to any divorce order. The complexities of divorce can overwhelm any individual, but there is no reason to face it alone.
