Prenuptial agreements determine how marital assets are divided

Ohio readers know that divorce is complicated, especially when a couple has significant wealth or assets. This is why it is important for couples to consider the benefits provided by a prenuptial agreement. While this is a common practice for wealthy couples, couples of all income levels can benefit from the protection of a prenuptial agreement. In case of divorce, this legal agreement will determine how marital assets will be divided as well as how to settle other divorce matters.

Famous actress Kaley Cuoco has recently announced her divorce from her husband of less than two years. Reports indicate that the couple mutually agreed to end the marriage and that a prenuptial agreement was signed shortly before they were married in 2013. Specific details of the prenuptial agreement are not known, but it will determine how their property will be divided and how much Ms. Cuoco will pay her ex-husband in spousal support.

Celebrity divorces often provide negative examples of how couples should approach issues such as spousal support and child custody. However, this couple is able to avoid a contentious legal battle and the stress of a lengthy dispute because of the existence of a prenuptial agreement. It should be noted that a prenuptial agreement should be carefully tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual couple.

Before marriage, Ohio couples should explore the benefits of this type of legal protection. Contrary to what many people believe, drafting a prenuptial agreement is not planning to divorce before the marriage even begins. Rather, it provides a practical, legally binding way by which a couple can have deserved peace of mind regarding marital assets and wealth.
