Accepting a job during divorce may be wise

Some people in Ohio may be tempted not to take a job if one is offered while they are going through the divorce process. This is because they fear that accepting a job may negatively impact whether or not they end up getting child support or alimony, for example. Taking advantage of a job opportunity during divorce is a wise choice, though, for multiple reasons.

First, when a person relies on his or her ex for support, this person loses control over his or her finances. For example, an ex may decide to punish a person for the dissolution of the marriage by refusing to pay him or her child support for several months. Although a court order for the alimony may exist, this does not necessarily mean the ex will choose to follow it, and even though it can be enforced, this requires both legal fees and time.

It is also wise to accept a job offer during divorce because this builds confidence in a person. Having a job gives a person the opportunity to make new friends as well as acquire valuable skills. The job can also give the person something to focus on other than the divorce.

Divorce is a complex process, and taking the incorrect steps or making unwise decisions may end up costing a person financially and emotionally in the long run. This is particularly true when issues such as alimony or the division of assets are at the center of the divorce proceeding. People who are going through divorce in Ohio have the right to fight for the most personally favorable outcome while still considering the other party's wishes.
