Humor may help those dealing with divorce

Many individuals are affected by divorce. One divorce website says that anywhere between 40 and 47 percent of marriages in the U.S. will end in divorce. Divorce is taxing, and it can be a difficult experience for some. For others, the key to moving on after a marriage has ended is humor.

Humor has helped rejuvenate individuals after divorce time and time again. Many say that it helps put their situation into perspective and help them look on the bright side of things. One Ohio woman said that, after her marriage dissolved, she relied heavily on her sense of humor to keep her from crying in front of her children.

For her, cracking jokes about her life and herself gave her the ability to cope with the divorce. According to her, there is a major difference between having a sense of humor and simply being humorous. When her and her husband ended their marriage, he kept the majority of their friends. This left her with few friends outside of her coworkers, but with the help of her sense of humor, she managed to turn many of her working relationships into lasting friendships. She also believes that her sense of humor helped lead her to her next husband, whom she married more than a decade ago.

This woman says that any individual going through a divorce should look at their situation from a perspective that says that someone else has it worse out there. She also says that keeping her mind on her children gave her something to keep her chin up about. Other reasons to laugh can be found in day-to-day life. According to her, humor is an incredible equalizer.
